“JAKARTA: MODELS OF COLLECTIVE SPACE FOR THE EXTENDED METROPOLIS”: EXHIBITION AND RECEPTION

On June 1st, 2016, from 5-7 PM the Harvard Club of Indonesia and the Harvard Alumni Association will host an exhibition and reception for “Jakarta: Models of Collective Space for the Extended Metropolis.” The event will be held at Jakarta City Hall and will feature opening remarks by special guests Mr. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, Governor of Jakarta, Sean Chiao, President of AECOM Asia Pacific, and Mohsen Mostafavi, Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design. The event will include a lecture by Felipe Correa, Associate Professor and Director of the Urban Design Degree program at Harvard GSD as well as presentations by Clayton Strange-Lee, Devin Dobrowolski, and Andrew Boyd.
The exhibition is the culmination of work produced through an intensive, advanced design studio held in the spring of 2016 at Harvard Graduate School of Design led by Professor Correa and Clayton Strange-Lee. Advanced option studio courses are taught as part of the curriculum at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and include accomplished students from multiple design backgrounds including architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design. Following an initial research phase and visit to Jakarta by the students in February, the studio looked at the implementation of Jakarta’s new Mass Rapid Transit line (MRT) as an opportunity to reframe ideas of private mobility and collective space at a pivotal moment for the future development of Jakarta. The exhibition features research drawings and a series of speculative proposals for innovative transit oriented development at several stops along the MRT along with detailed models of the projects. The work was produced by interdisciplinary student teams with a focus on how spaces organized around mass transit can be repositioned as an urban amenity for Jakarta and an interface between public and private realms within the city.
The studio was sponsored by AECOM and represents the first in series of future collaborations between AECOM and Harvard GSD that will address specific issues faced by key metropolitan regions within Southeast Asia. The exhibition will be on view at Jakarta City Hall through the end of June.
